Major News on H&D2
Monday 30th October 2000

As promised we have sack loads of new information about H&D2, we have no new screenshots but plenty of mouth-watering information.

The first thing that will come as a blessing is the new tactical map, they have made some major changes to it since the days of H&D. Instead of having to wait of a separate screen that can take a while to load up, pausing the action, Illusion have built in a new tactical map that at the touch of a button opens in your control interface. The tactical map and interface are on one screen, you can switch between them by pressing one button, making it easier to control the soldier.

Their will be 24 missions, in 7 campaigns, set in Africa, Burma, London, Normandy, Czech borders and Germany, some tactical like in H&D, Some of them are story driven where you play with one character, Gary Bristol. It all ends with an epic battle between the SAS and the KGB that leads us on to the cold war.. Every mission will be set in a different environment and all have a different goal, and each of these goals is a step towards the goal of the campaign. You will be able to actually take off and fly planes in various missions, here is an example of one of the actual game missions.

Example: You control a six engined Messerschmitt 30023A - A big transport plane. You're flying through a big valley and you are attacked by British fighters (because of your German markings) The flying missions in single player are mostly limited, because you can not fly from the level. However in multiplayer it will be possible to get a plane, fly away and attack from the air.

1. Daylight missions in woodlands. You have to sneak your 4-man squad into an enemy compound and crawl into the back of a truck. This then drives you into a base where you have to infiltrate the camp.

2. Your men have to board a battle cruiser (see screenshots) and eliminate all the crew before you send a signal then plant magnetic mines all over the ship and sink it.

3. Your ship crashes into an iceberg, which the Germans are using as a survey base. There is a submarine docked at the base, you must break into the base, and steal the sub.

Other features include the ability for your character to swim which should have been in the first H&D and FFF/DB, but the inclusion of the ability to select your gun position as either H&D style of FFF/DB style gets my vote as the best change, and we have the assurances that you will never fall through the scenery in H&D2.

With games like Teamfortress 2, all the new unreal mods and not forgetting counter-strike, H&D2 needs to come up with something special if its going to be serious multiplayer competition to all the above, and from what we know its certainly taking no prisoners.

Their will be the classic H&D co-op style of play that we all love allowing 4 players (number of players not yet confirmed) to team together and play the whole game from start to finish. Then we have the new types that follow closely from games like Counter-strike and Quake such as deathmatch and capture the flag. But there is more, one of the more interesting mulitplayer modes will be the stealth games, now these do sound fun, here is an example:

One team guards a base and in the base is either an important prisoner or artefact, the other team all equipped with silencers and other stealth goodies have to enter the base and steal, kidnap or rescue the required object or person. I can see stress levels running high on this one.

We hope this whets your appetite for what is sure to be an astounding game, we will be bringing you more info and an exclusive video after our trip to Take2 next month.

Most of this news was obtained from PCGamer magazine, they also have some new screenshots from the game in this months edition.
